Argentine Experts Offer Summer Nutrition Advice

After the Christmas and New Year festivities, and amid high January temperatures, nutrition experts highlight the importance of adapting one's diet to aid digestion and maintain hydration. According to Cecilia Alessandri, a nutritionist at Grupo L, the body does not require the same nutrients in winter as in summer, so 'eating in tune with the body' means choosing fresh, light, and seasonal foods that help regulate body temperature. The specialist noted that the great allies for this time of year are fruits like watermelon, melon, and pineapple, along with fresh vegetables like tomato, cucumber, and zucchini, as reported by the Argentine News Agency. These foods not only hydrate naturally but also replenish electrolytes (such as potassium and magnesium) lost through sweating. It is also suggested to opt for lean proteins (fish, chicken, cold legumes) and healthy fats like avocado and nuts, avoiding heavy preparations, fried foods, or excessive seasonings that hinder digestion under the summer sun.

Category | Recommended Foods | Benefits --- | --- | --- Hydrating Fruits | Watermelon, melon, peach, pineapple | Provides water and vitamins Fresh Vegetables | Tomato, cucumber, arugula, carrot | Fiber and minerals; easy to digest Lean Proteins | Fish, egg, cold legumes | Energy without heaviness Healthy Snacks | Vegetable sticks, hummus, yogurt | Prevents consumption of ultra-processed foods

Regarding hydration, safe water should be the absolute protagonist, displacing sugary drinks and alcohol, which can promote dehydration. The nutritionist placed special emphasis on vulnerable populations: children should regularly receive fruits and natural smoothies, while older adults should be offered water constantly, as they tend to lose the sensation of thirst. 'It's not about eating less, but about eating better,' the expert concluded, reinforcing the idea that a proper selection of foods is the best defense against heatstroke.
